Tea Tree Oil Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

Tea tree oil is also known as melaleuca oil, has a fresh camphoraceous scent and a color that can range from a pale yellow to colorless. Tea Tree Oil is derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to Australia. There are over 300 species of the Tea Tree that currently grow in Australia. The Tea Tree was named by sailors during the eighteenth century that made tea from the tree that smelled like nutmeg. The leaves of the Tea Tree are what the oil is derived from.

Tea Tree Oil is at times referred to as “Miracle”, thanks to its many anti-viral and anti-fungal benefits. Australia has even included the oil in their first aid kits for their soldiers.

Tea Tree Oil Benefits

Tea Tree Oil is less expensive compared to the other oils on the market today. Tea Tree Oil can be called a “jack of all trades” with its amazing healing and health powers.

Tea Tree Oil is applied to the skin topically for fungal infections of the nail (onychomycosis). It is also used topically for cuts and abrasions, for burns, insect bites and stings, boils, vaginal infections, recurrent herpes labialis, toothache, infections of the mouth and nose, sore throat, and for ear infections such as otitis media.

Tea Tree Oil Uses

With Tea Tree Oil’s amazing healing powers it has become a natural ingredient in many of our products.

  • Keep a spray bottle handy filled with water and a few drops of Tea Tree Oil, the amount will depend on the size of our spray bottle. You will find so many uses for your Tea Tree Oil bottle, be sure to write on the bottle so you can just keep refilling it.
  • Add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil to your shampoo for a truly refreshing clean look and feel.
  • Take your favorite moisturizer and add a few drops of the oil for that added protection with moisturizing ability.
  • To soothe sunburn or skin disorders add a few drops to your warm bath water, lay back and relax.
  • Some people add it to bath water to treat cough, bronchial congestion, and pulmonary inflammation.
  • For cuts and sores, add one to two drops on a cotton ball on the affected area.
  • Shingles got you feeling miserable; try this mixture- ten to fifteen drops of oil to half cup Epsom salts dissolved in your bath. Soak for a while then you can follow-up with a massage of ten drops of oil to two tbsp. of grapeseed or coconut oil.
  • For softer cleaner skin- Mix three to five drops of Tea Tree Oil with a carrier oil and apply to skin after a bath or shower. Choose an ecologically friendly carrier oil – and mak sure it is a lightly scented oil like almond, or wheat germ oil.
  • Great t to clean your house, just add a few drops to water and vinegar for a non-toxic cleaner.
  • For hair issues like lice or dandruff- Rinse your hair with warm water first then take a small spray bottle and mix a few drops of Tea Tree Oil and water and spray all through your hair, massaging it in for full coverage.
  • By using an essential oil diffuser, Tea Tree Oil can be diffused into the air, thus creating a medicinal antiseptic environment.
  • For Acne breakouts, just put a few drops of Tea Tree Oil on a cotton ball and rub onto the affected area a few times a day.
  • For those horrible earaches, get relief with just mixing one drop of Tea Tree Oil with one tsp. olive oil, drip mixture into the ear. After a few second remove by tilting your head and wipe with a cotton ball any excess.
  • Add a few drops in your washing machine to give your clothes a fresh natural clean scent. For those times you forget to put the clothes in the dryer, just add Tea Tree Oil on a cloth to remove the mildew smell.
  • Freshen up your carpets with your spray bottle of water and Tea Tree Oil.
  • For jock itch just mix ten to fifteen drops of oil to two tbsp. of a carrier oil such as jojoba oil. Try to apply 2 times daily and use corn starch to reduce chapping.
  • To help with allergies, massaging Tea Tree Oil directly into the chest, abdomen or the reflex points of the feet will relieve most allergy symptoms.

Tea Tree Oil Side Effects

Though it is a very potent oil, Tea Tree Oil does not seem to produce any side effects, but always use a patch test if you suspect you’re sensitive to a particular oil.
