Chamomile Essential Oil Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

Chamomile Essential oil has a history of use that spans all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, who used it in dedication to the stars and moon. It is commonly used as a gentle and soothing mood-boositng and sleep inducing essential oil, and two distinct varieties exits; Roman and German. 

The Roman Chamomile plant (Chamaemelum nobile) is the more common variant and is indigenous to Italy, Germany, France, Morocco and France. It has a daisy-like small white flower and a hairy stalk and leaves. The Roman chamomile flowers produce a much higher amount of oil than their German counterparts, and as such the oil is generally less expensive.

Though German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) oil is also produced through steam distillation, it yields significantly smaller quantities. During the steam distillation process, azulene – a blue organic compound , is released to give the oil it’s distinctive blue color. Azulene has many anti-inflammatory properties making the oil perfect for treating swollen joins and arthritis. Though the name might suggest that the plant in indigenous to Germany, in actuality, German Chamomile is found most typically in France, Eastern Europe and Hungary, Egypt.

Although these oils are not dissimilar in many of their properties, Roman chamomile oil is most well know for its ability to stimulate blood flow. As such, this oil may be used to stimulate menstruation in women and is especially useful for women who suffer from hormonal problems that cause irregular periods, including polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Chamomile Essential Oil Benefits

Both German and Roman chamomile essential oils are great antiseptics and can be used to cleanse and disinfect wounds and prevent infection. this also makes to oil great for treating fungal infections as well as preexisting conditions such as ringworm and psoriasis. Chamomile is also beneficial for:

  • Depression – Chamomile is a particularly effective mood enhancer and may be used to naturally treat depression and anxiety. Those who suffer from sluggishness due to low blood sugar or a hectic lifestyle could also reap the rewards of this amazing oil.
  • Digestive Health- Though great care needs to be taken when ingesting any essential oil, when diluted thoroughly, Chamomile can make an excellent remedy for digestion related ills such as diarrhea and constipation. It promotes the production of digestive juices that ensure the belly and bowels work properly and don’t become inflamed. Those who suffer from bloating or a distended stomach could also benefit from this oil.
  • Insomnia – Chamomile oil is perfect for helping you drift off into a deep sleep. When used in combination with lavender, the relaxing properties of this oil work as a great remedy for insomnia.
  • Skin conditions – Alongside the calming properties it has on the mood, Chamomile calms skin irritations, making it an effective treatment for eczema, acne and rashes.

Chamomile Essential Oil Uses

Chamomile oil is frequently used to treat young kids. When diluted, it can be used to sooth the pains associated with teething as it quiets the inflamed gums in the infant’s mouth. In addition, it can also be used in young kids to gastric spasms and sooth diarrhea. 

When diluted, the oil can be used as a natural mouthwash, preventing against tooth decay thanks to its natural antibacterial properties. When the oil is mixed with hot water and the vapor inhaled, it’s an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. 

Chamomile Essential Oil Side Effects

Chamomile essential oil does not seem to produce any side effects, but like many essential oils, it is not recommended for use with pregnant women or children. Some essential oils may cause irritation or allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin so it is wise to do a patch test before using regularly.
