Bergamot Essential Oil Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

The Bergamot plant is known by a lot of other names: Aceite de Bergamota, Bergamot, Bergamot Orange, Bergamota, Bergamotier, Bergamoto, Bergamotte, Bergamotto Bigarade, Orange, Citrus Bergamia, Citrus Aurantium, Bergamia, Huile de Bergamote, and Oleum Bergamotte. 

The scientific name of the Bergamot plant is Citrus Aurantium or Citrus Bergamia. The Botanical name is Citrus Bergamia. The plant is normally tropical; however it does thrive in Europe. Opposed to the steam distillation the Bergamot plant is derived through cold compression. The Bergamot plant produces a citrus fruit and the oil is taken from the fruits peel and has a very pleasant, sweet smell.

Bergamot Essential Oil is composed of Alpha Pinene, Beta Bisabolene, Alpha Bergaptnen, Alpha Terpineol,Linalool, Limonene, Linalyl Acetate, Nerol, Neryl Acetate, Geraniol, Geraniol Acetate and Myrcene, which all contribute to its myriad health benefits.

Bergamot Oil is used to make several types of medicines. The Bergamot plant is the most common addition to black tea, which is known as “Earl Grey”. The oil creates a feeling of freshness, joy and energy in cases of sadness and depression by improving the circulation of the blood. With using natural essential oils you avoid side effects that other synthetic products have. Bergamot Essential Oil protects wounds from becoming septic and developing deadly tetanus. More benefits:

  • Manufacturers use Bergamot Essential Oil for creams, perfumes, lotions, soaps, and suntan oils.
  • You can use the oil as a citrus flavoring in gelatin and puddings.
  • The oil can be used in room fresheners and sprays.
  • When used in vaporizer, Bergamot Oil will relieve congestion and respiratory issues.
  • To start your day with energy, while taking your shower place a washcloth with five drops of Bergamot Essential Oil and place it on your chest with the hot steam from the shower for a few minutes.
  • Apply a few drops in your mouthwash to kill germs and protect teeth.
  • Take a cotton ball and place a few drops of Bergamot Essential Oil on it and inhale for a few minutes. You will start to feel the positive energy charging your body. With each deep breath, all those negative feelings will just disappear.
  • By inhaling the Bergamot Essential Oil will help eliminate the formation of gall stones.
  • Regular use in the bath and your skin and hair will be healthy and shiny looking.
  • Great additions for blending with Bergamot Essential Oil are Clary Sage, Frankincense, Mandarin, Jasmine, Black Pepper, Cypress, Sandalwood, Geranium, Nutmeg, Orange, Rosemary, Vetiver and Ylang-Ylang Oil. It is also complementary with the many other citrus oils.
  • Use Bergamot Oil for indigestion, gas and flatulence by combining one teaspoon a carrier oil such as Wheat Germ Oil with two drops of Bergamot Essential Oil, two drops of German Chamomile Essential Oiland two drops of Fennel Essential Oil. Apply by massaging your entire abdominal area at night is best just before going to bed.
  • Bergamot Essential Oil is great for bouts of Urinary Tract Infections. Try mixing three drops each of Bergamot, Lavender, and Tea Tree oil to one cup of organic, plain yoghurt and prepare a bath by filling the tub with enough warm water to cover your hips. Add the mixture to the water and mix it well and sit in the tub for about 10 minutes. Repeat every day for at least a week or so.

Bergamot Essential Oil Side Effects

Bergamot essential oil does not seem to produce any side effects, but like many essential oils, it is not recommended for use with pregnant women or children. Some essential oils may cause irritation or allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin so it is wise to do a patch test before using regularly.
